A Day in the Life: Fishing Aboard Stoked On Fishing Charters - August 21, 2024
Chris from Stoked On Fishing jumps on board and films the private full-day fishing charter on Stoked On Fishing Charters' newest vessel, a 39-foot Contender powered by triple 350 Mercury motors. On August 21st, 2024, they head 70 miles offshore from Long Beach, California, targeting bluefin tuna. After spotting some blow-ups beneath circling birds with the Fujinon 14x40 TSX1440 gyro-stabilized binoculars, they set up the kite with frozen flying fish and successfully hooked and landed two bluefin tuna. Watch the crew in action as they reel in these powerful fish.

Sometimes clients choose to fight the fish alone but it drops chances of getting more fish on the boat. We try to get them in as soon as possible to get lines out again. We also have a guy on the top working the kite 🪁 to hopefully hook a second while clients fight there fish.

What make and model bait reel do you use?
It is the Okuma Makaira 50W 2-Speed Lever Drag. It works great. Last year, we landed over 300 Bluefin using these, and they held up great.

So is the throttle the hookset basically?
When we get bit the line drops from the quick release connected to the kite and it creates a lot of slack in the line. Without putting the boat in gear it takes about 30 seconds of reeling to catch up and get the line tight. We do this so that we can get the line tight as soon as possible, giving us a better chance to hook the fish.
